چکیده

This is a cross sectional study conducted in the National Center of Public Health Laboratories (NCPHL) of Aden – Yemen, during October-December 2011, with an overall aim to compare the results of platelet count by the automated versus the manual methods. Study included 190 random samples, examined with confirmatory platelet estimate done by the stained thin blood film. The mean platelets count estimated by the manual method was 225.2 ± 95.4 × 109/L, while that estimated by the automated method was 245.7 ± 109.8 × 109/L, with no significant statistical difference between both means (p>0.05). The Pearson correlation test showed significant positive correlation between both methods (r: 0.563), this correlation remained significant when the samples of normal count by the two methods were correlated (r: 0.359), but it was insignificant negative correlation when the samples of low or high counts by the two methods were correlated (r: -0.151 and -0.559) respectively. This study concluded that significant positive correlation is present between the manual and the automated counting methods of platelets and recommended that platelet count is not varied when done by manual or automated methods, but in every method, it should be accompanied by platelet estimate, especially with abnormal counts. *Corresponding author: Sawsan Bakhubaira, Department of Clinical hematology, National Center of Public Health Laboratories, Aden, Yemen, Tel: 00967777109290; E-mail: [email protected] Received August 21, 2013; Accepted November 12, 2013; Published November 14, 2013 Citation: Bakhubaira S (2013) Automated Versus Manual Platelet Count in Aden. Dengue with Normal Platelet Count and no Hemoconcentration: Automated Hematogram in Cases with Underlying Thalassemia

Dear Editor, Dengue is an important arbovirus infection. This infection can result in an acute febrile illness. The important hematological abnormalities included hemoconcentration and thrombocytopenia (1). Due to the decreased platelet count, the patient might develop petechiae and hemorrhagic complication. In endemic area, the presumptive diagnosis of dengue is usually derived by the cl...

Introduction: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a prevalent complication in the patients with cirrhosis and ascites, which leads to high intrahospital mortality. Diagnosis is made when ascetic fluid neutrophils is ≥250 cells/mm3. Manual counting of neutrophils is time-consuming, technically difficult, expensive and in many cases individual-dependent. In contrast, automated counting ...

A Comparative Study of the Ovine Haemogram: Cell-dyn 3500 versus Manual Methods

Manual hematology techniques traditionally applied in farm animal medicine are time consuming and laborintensive, especially when large numbers of samples have to be processed. As a result, several automated hematology instruments have been developed for use in these species. An automated hematology analyzer (Abbott Cell-Dyne 3500 system) was used in performing a complete blood cell count and d...

The estimation of platelet count from a blood smear on the basis of the red cell: platelet ratio.

OBJECTIVE The estimation of platelet count from blood smears is a daily routine laboratory test, which should be systematic each time the automated count is erroneous. In our laboratory, we estimate the platelet count indirectly by using the automated red blood cell (RBC) and calculating the platelet count on the basis of the red cell: platelet ratio in a stained blood film. In this study, we a...
